Hosts step up work for Euro 2012

Preparations are picking up for the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, less than a year out from the tournament.

Set to begin in June 2012, organisers are preparing for the influx of at least 700,000 tourists during the 16-team competition.

In Ukraine, concerns remain over stadiums in Kiev and Lviv, which are yet to be completed.

More worryingly for the population of Lviv, there still needs to be improvements to roads linking the city with Truskavets, where many tourists will have to stay for the three-week tournament.

But hopes remain high in the city, as hotel employees and restaurants managers have been taking hospitality training in order to cope with the thousands of fans they expect.

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said he was confident the facilities would be ready for the beginning of the tournament.

I was myself in Poland and Ukraine last week and there is light at the end of the tunnel we see that (work) is progressing. There is still a lot to do, but we are very positive, he said on Friday.

Everything will be ready well in time and you can see the change in enthusiasm in the two countries everyone is getting very much into it now that we are approaching the Euro (Championships).

Out of a total of 51,200 hotel beds UEFA said needed to be available for supporters in the four cities, 18,200 were still unavailable as of May.

However, Ukraine s organisers still remain optimistic they will be ready in time.

The winner of the tournament will pocket 7.5 million euros of a total purse of 196 million euros, up from 184 million euros in 2008.
